Caius Marcius Coriolanus, the male figure in the center of the dish, was a legendary, Roman General who turned against Rome, and was portrayed in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus written in 1605-1608. Using literary references as inspiration gave the porcelain painters a chance to compose original images as opposed to copying old master paintings. Awards were given to artists of the Vienna Porcelain Factory for these original ideas and compositions.
