Transfer-printed wares, like these two pieces, were first developed in
England in the 1750s. The process involves transfering a printed design
from a thin sheet of gelatin or tissue paper onto a biscuit-fired ceramic.
This technique allowed manufacturers to create repeated, standardized
designs. Blue was the most common color of transferwares, but a wide
range of colors was available.
