Armorial porcelains were a large group of ceramics to be exported from China. The coats of arms were handpainted by Chinese decorators using designs or written descriptions sent by the customer. In most cases, the designs were interpreted correctly, but in some there was a loss in translation with words being included in the finished works instead of the decorative motif.
