The chiton is the most basic garment that would have been worn in ancient Greece. Essentially a sleeveless shirt, this garment is created by stitching together two rectangular pieces of basic fabric. The chiton could then be draped by the wearer in various ways and kept in place by brooches and belts. At all times, the chiton was worn at ankle length by women, with excess fabric pulled up under the belt in blouse fashion. Chitons could be embroidered and embellished, depending on the status and wealth of the wearer.
