The peplos is a garment worn solely by Greek women. Consisting of a large, rectangular piece of material folded vertically and hung from the shoulders with a broad overfold, the peplos could be belted around the waist or below the bust. Of all the identifying characteristics of the peplos, the formation of neckline and armholes by fibulae (broochlike pins) is the most distinctive detail. If worn with other types of clothing, the peplos was the outermost garment.
