The origin of the underglaze blue cobalt decoration porcelain that became so popular with the diffusion of Chinese export ware during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) can be ascribed to earlier Near Eastern earthenware traditions; it has also been suggested that the very technique of applying underglaze decoration onto a ceramic vase was probably introduced into China from Iran.
