Gift of Arthur L. Frank, PhD & Joanne B. FrankMatt Phillips was born in New York, New York in 1927 and died in Oakland, California in 2017. Originally aspiring to become a poet, he studied painting while traveling in Europe and at the Barnes Foundation, at its former Merion, PA location. Phillips is known for his work utilizing the monotype technique, helping establish the technique as a legitimate art form. The monotype technique is when a metal plate, covered in ink or paint is pressed onto canvas or paper, limiting the artists to only one image each. The Drexel Collection held an exhibition of Matt Phillips’ work in 2019. These new acquisitions will be used to demonstrate new techniques in printmaking that were underrepresented in the Collection–the monotype and linocuts.
