Frieda Baumann received her M.D. degree from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1917. She was the College’s first student to graduate cum laude.
In 1920, after postgraduate study at the New York Infirmary for Women and Children, Bellevue Hospital, and Scranton State Hospital, she returned to the Woman’s Medical College as an instructor in internal medicine. Several years later she became involved in the establishment of the College’s preventive medicine program and was appointed physician to the students and head of the Student Health Department. She initiated a policy of providing all students with routine physical examinations to demonstrate the value of preventive medicine and health maintenance techniques.
Dr. Baumann pioneered a private practice in the treatment of adult allergies. In addition to her affiliation at the College, she headed the College medical service at the Philadelphia General Hospital, where she was appointed that institution‘s first woman chief of medical service. Upon her retirement from the faculty in 1959, she was named Professor Emeritus of Medicine.
