This landscape painting is typical of Charles Linford (1846-1897). It is very similar to French Barbizon paintings, such as the landscape by Daubigny and the image of a birch tree was one of Linford’s favorite to depict. Charles Linford (1846-1897) was an American landscape painter working in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York and Plainfield, New Jersey. His work is similar to that of the French Barbizon painters. He was one of the first artists to discover Scalp Level, a small town near Johnstown, PA which became a retreat for local artists trying to escape Pittsburgh.
