This image is referred to as a mammoth plate photograph, they were created using the contact printing method from a glass plate negative, usually sized at 18 by 21 inches, meaning the size of image you see was the size of the negative that captured it. Watkins, who took this photograph, wanted his photographs of landscapes to challenge paintings, so his images needed to be grand.
