Description

The collection consists of documents related to the Maar family, and their relations the Ackharts, in the Hudson Valley region. The collection contains 13 letters written by Nathan Ackhart while deployed with the 3rd N.Y. Artillery during the Civil War. The letters are addressed to either his sister or Cynthia, whom he married. Robert Maar served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946 as indicated on his photograph in File 1.33. The Maars and Ackharts are related through the marriage of David C. Maar and Maud Ackhart described in the article in File 1.15. Documents included from around the turn of the 20th century indicate that members of the Maar family belonged to a club called the “Happy Twelve” which would hold an annual gathering usually in November. Ephemera relating to the “Happy Twelve” dates from 1899 to 1912.
