View of two unfinished standing cows, the one on the left being much bigger and more complete. This cow faces in profile toward the left, with unfinished hooves and very little shading. It is also marked with a series of numbers for indicating its coloring. 1 is at the mouth, 2 at the lower part of the cow's head, upper back, and legs, and 3 is at its horns, lower front, stomach, and upper back. To the right in the lower right corner is another cow sketch that is much smaller (perhaps a study for the same cow), whose entire lower half is unfinished. This cow also stands in profile, facing the right. To the right of the larger cow's upper back is the start of a sketch of cow's horns. In the upper left corner is the 'key' for the corresponding coloring on the cow, it reads: "1 light / 2 black / 3 yellowish brown brindled with black"
