Untitled (Untitled Sketch) [1853]

Untitled (Untitled Sketch): View of a body of water with a variety of animals and people. In the foreground, on the left, there is the body of water, and on the right there is the grassy bank with a cow that reclines in the lower right corner, facing the viewer. Behind this cow is a goat that stands in profile facing the right. In the middle ground, the water continues back on the left side, with two more cows standing within it. The cow on the left stands in profile facing the right, while the one to its right stands facing the left, with its head down to drink from the water. To the right of this cow are two sheep, with the leftmost one facing toward the viewer, and the right one facing the right to graze. In the background there are indications of the banks, as well as more water. In the middle is another cow which stands facing the right, and two human figures that sit on the bank underneath an overhang. They both wear hats, and the one on the left points out toward the left. On the right above these figures is a slight elevation that slopes down toward the center of the composition. On the top of this elevation are more animals, including a small goat, a cow that appears to bellow with its mouth open, facing the left, and two horses. The rightmost edge is made up of a tree and three sheep that recline on the lower part of the elevation. The sky is indicated by light shading marks. In the lower right corner the drawing is signed "Carrie M. Clowes, April 15 1853, Poughkeepsie (?)"
