Miss Hamilton, a princess last year, will succeed Sallie Austin on the fair and rodeo throne. Last years- queen will perform the coronation Saturday. AND MRS- MAX BENITZ were honored at a recent banquet for winning county and state championships in the DeKalb selected five-acre corn growing contest. Record-Bulletin Photo Max Benitz Who’s Who of the week is Max Benitz. member and past president of the Benton Coun ty Farm Bureau, and a Roza farmer. He came to Prosser in the fall of 1944 and broke out a new 80-acre tract. He has built this up to 250 acres. Max’s operation is highly diversified as he produces peaches, grapes, hay, cattle, hogs, sugar beets, corn and small grains. He also has a young apple orchard. Max re ceived special recognition last month as winner in a state corn contest. Though Benitz was born in the Sunflower state he likes Benton County better than any other place lie ever lived. He is a member of the asparagus 1 association and the hay as sociation. He has also worked with young people in 4-FI. Max and his wife, Marie. have two boys and two girls and a foster child. Record - Bulletin readers really outsmarted the Who’s ■Who Contest editor this week. Out of nearly 200 entries 80 per cent had the correct num ber of clues and only two con testants missed guessing the Who’s Who of the week. A total of $33.90 in cold cash was paid Mrs. Wilbert Hain. Route 1, Prosser, by Prosser Super Duper for her winning entry in this week’s contest. Mrs. Hain received $7.50 for correctly naming Max Benitz. Who’s Who of the week and she received an additional $26.40 (a double jackpot) for finding all 10 clues which divulged Max’s identity. The winning entry was drawn during the noon hour at Super Duper Tuesday by El mer Jones. A Record-Bulletin with the clues marked may be checked at Super Duper. The fact that so many folks in Prosser are really eagle- eyed is making it tough on the paper staff since we are try ing to build up the contest jackpot. But if you can find all the clues next week you will be entitled to $13.20 plus $7.50 for naming the Who’s Who, provided your entry is drawn out of the pot at Farm ers Insurance next Tuesday. If you haven’t tried Who’s Who you are missing a chance at a lot of fun and some easy cash. Even the folks who haven’t been here long should be able to find out who the contestant is if they locate all the clues. Bear in mind, ev ery family is allowed an entry for each member. After planting three times this year in their cut-stone planters around the Wishing Well in Volunteer Park,.their good humor has been stretched a bit too far with this last onslaught on their efforts. After the Orthopedic Guild members got the well back into working order again after the last seige of vandalism, everyone ex pected to rest a bit and enjoy the fruits of their labors. Not so, the very next day after everything was put in order, which included a new explanatory sign and painting of the protective iron gi-fll aocl cleaning of the well, all of the flowers were pulled from the planters. $ $ $1 * Another busy person is Mrs. E. E. Allen, newly elected di rector of the Blue Mountain District of the Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs. She’s shuttling back and forth over the area from Dayton to Richland in setting up the years’ program and securing the something like 15 or 16 standing chairmen. Due to the wide expanse of area involved in the district set-up two Christmas Shows are planned which entails two separate committees. At the Monday meeting in her home out in Riverview District representatives of the Tri-Cities Garden Clubs gather ed to formulate plans. One interesting feature will be the picture boxes entered by the various clubs with a western style theme. It is always fascinating to see the interpretations in this style of entry. Mrs. W. K. Rice, Richland, is to be assistant superintendent. This is the second year for area clubs to assist in putting on this section of the Fail*. There is only one main problem . . . the best of laid plans go astray if there are no flowers like last year when there was a dearth for sure. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in agriculture and soon after became one of the first Columbia Basin settlers on Block 1—now known as Pasco Heights. He developed a 94-acre farm on which he still lives but present ly leases. He has been active in civic activities. He headed the Cit izens Advisory Committee to the Pasco School board, is a former i member of the Bi-County Fair Board and a former commissioner of the South Columbia Irrigation District. He is a member ol the vestry in the Pasco Church of Our Saviour. Mrs. Ralph Smith, Pasco, I judged the contest. $63,650 Allotted to Eastern Fairs Eastern Washington fairs were among the 90 throughout the state which yesterday were allocated $63,650 of some $340,000 by the state department of agriculture. The money came from the state fair fund supported by 30 per cent of the state’s share of proceeds from pari-mutuel betting at horse race tracks. ----------------------------------- — Largest single amount was the $15,150 slated for the Central Washington fair at Yakima. Spokane Interstate and South east Washington at Walla Walla were among five to receive grants of $13,250 each from the fund. Allocation of $11,000 each went io North Central Washington at Waterville and Palouse Empire at Colfax. Class B county fairs received amounts ranging from $2750 to $6450. Four youth shows received $13,425 each. The tour is a training session to teach the youngsters selection of good livestock. Members al so learn many other things on a ,ur’ °f this type such as marketing livestock, feeding, breeding, herd management and other good livestock prac-1 tices. Top team score for the Ben ton County 4-H’ers was post ed by the Benton Busy Farm ers 4-H Club with Ed O’Brien, Eileen Benitz, and N a n c v W ilson compiling a 2242 point total. Second place team i score went to the Twin Bridges Club with 2083 points scored by Charles Nelson, John Rasmussen, and George Barnett. After- riding on the Benton County Junipr Fair ( third place winning float) in the Parade the girls with their chaperone went directly to the Tri - City Country Club where they were met by the Queen Miss Judi Hamilton and her Court, Prin cesses Miss Eileen Benitz of Prosser, Miss Robyn Talbott of Kennewick, and Miss Janelie Boice of Kennewick. Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Wilkins were in charge of the lovely afternoon and evening activities for the girls. Upon arrival at the Tri - City Country Club the girls enjoyed a refreshing swim in the sparkling . Dressing in their western at tire they were served a most delicious fried chicken dinner. It is much easier to make a mistake with power trimmers and the personal devotion with which hand clippers are applied to shrubs is lost. Rather than having a real tightly clipped hedge for this time of year, many growers like less rigid shapes and prefer softer tones. These more informal types of hedge can be obtained by using a sharp knife or hand-pruning shears. Trimming in this case con sists simply of cutting off indiv idual shoots which are unsightly, too far out of lintf, or otherwise do not fit inlo the particular ef fect you desire. Many flower growers have been very disappointed with the color of chrysanthemum flowers tins year, but do not get discouraged. the flowers are just beginning to get their true colors. Fair Fruit Displays Good is normally a very good red: how ever, this year they came out yel low, and they faded very ;oon. | Mums need long nights and short I days, take your, choice, and cool I weather. Should you have mums that look as though they are not going to flower before frost, try a method known as shading to bring them into earlier bloom. Shading lim its a day length to 12 or 13 hours. Preferably this method is used in June and July by green house op erators. Usually the cloth is put over the flowers at 5 p.m. and removed at 8 a.m. the next morn ing. Correctly done "shading" can advance the bloom 25 to 56 days. ,Tlie Ohio Agricultural Station re commends a black cloth known as Winsor cloth number 375, with a mesh of 64 x 104 inch. The cloth admitted only 0.04 per cent total light. This method is us ed by commercial growers to ex tend their harvest season and is used in conjunction with a plant ing season that is spread over sev eral weeks. It looks as though the mums al the Agricultural Experiment Sta tion may be a little laler this year, but chrysanthemum growers should plan on a trip to Prosser sometime in October. They don’t say “Come, Baby,” at the calf scramble. The babies are frightened, bawling, balky animals who don’t understand that the' easiest way to end the battle would be to submit quietly to the halter and follow promptly to the finish line. That means that the scramble is mass wrestling bout, with boys grimly manhandling beasts in a seriously played junior rodeo. The winners don’t receive sil ver trophies or cash awards. Each reward is S100 to be used for the purchase of a calf — and the calf must be cared for during the next year and shown at the succeeding fair. But when it is won, selected from a herd of graded stock, and properly cared for. each calf be comes the winner’s own. And at the conclusion of the next year’s fair, the young owner may pock et a sizable sum, the sale price of his animal. | Six boys are winners each year , —two on each of the three rodeo programs. Contenders range in age from 10 to .18, and compete by age groups, with the older youths vying in thfe Friday night show. When prunes and apples are shiny, the “bloom" has been rubbed off. Be careful as to the removal of dirt. Do not scrub if it can be avoided for it scratches and removes bloom. Trim leafy tops of carrots, beets. etc. to within an inch of the top of the vegetable. This prevents moisture from evaporating too rap idly through the leaves. Keep vegetables fresh and crisp by storing in a cool, damp, place. Naturally all vegetables should be uniform as to size, shape, col or, and degree of maturity. They should be clean, free of mechani cal injury as well as plant insects ana disease. Root crops—cut off tap roots where they have tapered down to the size of a pencil. Also remove root hairs.. Tomatoes—be sure all stems are on or all stems are off. Ripe to matoes should be fully ripe. Green tomatoes should not have any col or whatsoever. Vine crops—pumpkins, squash, cucumbers should have stems and be neatly and evenly cut. Pod crops—peas, beans, okra should have short stems. Head crops—cabbage and let tuce should not be trimmed t o o closely. Leave on “wrapper leaves." Trim the stem off. Dry onions—should be ripe and mature. What is left on the stem should be dry and papery, and the roots shriveled and dry. Summer squash—should be small to medium in size, the skin soft j enough to be punctured by youri thumbnail. Sweet cqrn—exhibit with husks. Preparing Fair Exhibits By RAY FRENCH Gardening Consultant This year fruit, vegetable, and flower exhibits for the fair should be bigger and better than ever. The insect season has been bad, but there are many fine speci- i? j, 4 mens that can be exhibited by ev- ' cry family. There are open class- es for nearly everything that one H cares to show. Open class means that anyone can exhibit that particular prod uct. How many have said or have overheard someone say “That won a blue ribbon? Why, I have some nicer looking flowers, etc. than «that!” ! It you have something nice, . .. ' show it to the rest of us—at the fair. If you are interested, stop i at the County Extension office and ... " obtain a fair premium book. Should you have a friend who is J growing good flowers, vegetables, or fruits talk them into exhibiting their items at the fair. If they will not exhibit, you do it for them. Now for some general recom mendations. A. Flowers: Number of blooms— follow the premium list carefully. Too few or too many can disqual- ■ ify- . .....Stage of maturity—pick flowers j to that they will be in the proper stage of maturity at judging time. I Generally this is just before full bloom. . . Uniformity—this includes size, shape, color, and length of sterns. Size—according to type or vari- cly.Substance—freshness, firmness, and-or finess of texture. Foliage—Every exhibit of cut flowers must include foliage, for -- the quality and condition is con sidered in judging. No foliage is used except that on the stem of the specimen. Foliage should be cleaned, if dirty, by wiping care fully with a soft, damp cloth. Ac cessory foliage, such as florist greens is never used with speci men exhibits. Color—should be clear, unfaded with attractive, harmonious mark ings or shadings. Do not mix col-| ors of bloom in a class or lot numbers calling for one color o bloom. Mixed colors disqualifies. Stem-stiff, straight, long. Each girl brought her materials cut and readv to make into a dirndle skirt. The contestant was given three hours in which to set up her sewing center, make and model her skirt and clean up the sewing center. The girls used sewing machines provided, with which they were unfamiliar. Blue ribbon winners were: Glenda Ervin, Richland; Margar-i et Ehrig, West Richland; and Hel en Myers, Kennewick. Roger Roberts, of the Franklin County Extension office, reported yesterday. Spurred by the high prices paid at last year’s sale, growers have entered about 60 head in the 1959 sale. This compares with 26 steers auctioned at the last sale, when prices averaging $12 over the market were paid. - Almost twice as manv Iambs will be brought to the fat stock show Aug. 29 as were auctioned last year at the sale. Roberts re ported. Thus far, 50 lambs are en tered, compared with 26 in 1953. ENTRIES IN the swine section will be about the same as last year, when 11 were brought out to the sale. The livestock offered at the fat Stock sale has been raised by 4-H and FFA members. For most of these youngsters, the sale maxes a year’s project. The first hour was spent in making gen eral recommendations. Dur ing the second hour, the group was divided by departments such as beef, sheep, swine, and dairy, at which time spe cific recommendations for each department were made. Present were J. C. Pratt, Frank Hart, E. C. Tweedt. and Bill Evans, fair board members; Will Gerlitz, Harry Havens, Eldon Westergard, Roger Roberts, Donald Lamb, Bud Oswalt, Floyd Cooley, Al Killingsworth, Mrs. Al Clary, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Olson, Mrs. Paul Arbogast, Gus Ho- kanson, Frank Anderson and John Kirk. Will Gerlitz of the Benton County extension staff was in charge of the meeting. Achievement honoring 4-H club leaders members will be held in Mesa Oct. 21 and in Pasco Oct. 22, Roger L. Roberts, Franklin Coun ty Extension Agent, announced yesterday. The Mesa program will be in Russel Webber. About 20 Kennewick business men also attended the luncheon, said Col. Ed Hopkins, Kennewick chamber manager. Hugh Jacobs, assistant superin tendent of' Kennewick schools, gave an illustrated talk on popu lation and income trends in the Pacific northwest. Kahlotus Grange's booth placed first at the Benton-Franklin fair and third at Yakima. Kahlotus members reported on a fine meeting at Chiawana Grange at a surprise visitation Oct. IS. State Overseer Jack Slivers was present. Dennis Herron announced the state Wheat Growers Associa- . tion would meet in Spokane Nov. , 16 and 17. i Kahlotus will host Pomona Dec. 5 at a special 5th degree initiation at 3 p.m., with no-host dinner at 6 p.m. and installation of officers at 8 p.m. A Christmas holiday dance will be sponsored Dec. 26. Carol Mitz will represent Kahlo tus as baking queen, competing with other subordinate Grange queens to represent the county at the state Wheat Growers Associa tion meeting. Elizabeth Moore, county school board member, ask ed the Grange to be alert concern ing the movement under way to consolidate two counties into one central district. Gresap From Prosser Tours Phillips Plant PROSSER — Nineteen members ol the Prosser Chamber of Com merce toured the Phillips Chemi cal Plant at Finley Tuesday morn ing and met with a delegation from the Kennewick Chamber of Commerce at noon for a no-host luncheon at Dean’s Steak House. A complete lour of the chemical plant and a lecture on the manu facturing of products informed the tourist on the technical opera tions. Hugh Jacobs, assistant superin tendent of the Kennewick schools, spoke to the group on the increase in population in the slate since the 1880's. He pointed out that in the 1941-42 school year Kennewick had 949 pupils enrolled and dur ing 1958-59 there were 6.755 pupils i enrolled.
