Henry Sherwood of Pine ! Plains, N.Y., master of the New York Grange and overseer of the : national organization, succeeds Mr. Goss until the Grange’s next national convention. November 15, in Minneapolis. Mr. Goss had been master of of the Washington State Grange before going into the national or ganization. He first became active in Grange affairs at Findlay, near Pasco, in the 1920s. He became national master about seven years ago after many years as chairman of the executive com mittee. | Goss Memorial: R Million Patrons Minneapolis, Minn., Nov. 24. — The Albert S. Goss Grange Membership Memor ial was unanimously adopt ed by the National Grange last night with a goal of 1 million members by June 30, 1952, as “the .most appropriate and striking memorial” to the man who “loved, i lived and died for (the Grange) in order to build a stronger rural America and a world in which the freedom and dignity nf tho ir.d:. vidual is supreme.” Urging every national, state and local Grange leader to “spread the program and service of the Grange in this country as well as in for eign lands,” the delegates adopted a goal of an average net gain of 10 members for each subordinate Grange by June 30, 1951. To insure achievement of these objectives, the delegates instructed ..that necessary literature and aids be provided and to give appropri- ! ate recognition to outstanding state and county leadership in meeting these goals. I Gavel Program Close to 150 men and women enjoyed the gavel contest pro gram Friday evening when members of Locust Grove Grange entertained Highland Grange at the Locust Grove Grange hall. With the program in charge of Mrs. Ralph Nicosen, the play “Tobacco Road” was presented, with Lyle Simmelink, Mrs. Car roll Pratt, Mrs. Neil Miller, Mrs. Budd Larkin, Cecil and Gilbert Edwards included in the cast. Members of the hill-billy or chestra which participated in the play were Mrs. Gilbert Ed wards at the piano, Mrs. Fran ces Thiel, guitar, Ray , Bowers, violin, Neil Miller, jug, and Dale Quillen, the bones. So well received was the play that it is planned to present it again, probbaly as a swimming pool benefit, acording to those in charge. During the Hospital Drive the Grange set a goal of at least S150 as its contribution. Various, members donated to the Grange Hospital Fund over and above, i their private donations to the ’ hospital until the original goal was exceeded. During the Drive the Grange, installed a box in the front of; the Hall on meeting nights and. i any member so inclined could ; 1 drop an extra coin into this box. . With the money in this box, ten tickets on the Dream House were purchased and the lucky ticket was one of these ten tickets. The grange was awarded the prize in the Kennewick Hospital fund drive incentive last week. Choice was a “dream house” or $10,000 in cash. The grange elect ed to take the cash. A grange member this morn ing pointed out that it was in correctly reported following the award that the grange group had contributed only $10. Instead the grange itself contributed near $?00 to the hosptial fund drive and, in addition, its mem bers made private contributions. The Highlands grange is a non-profit, non-political organ ization. It received its charter in 1934. It now has a membership of 165. The grange has always rented quarters for its meetings. Several years ago it began col lecting money with which to build it own home. The $10,000 drive has solved its money problem, grange officials said today. :l ■' I I | r J I i 1 vKz \ .■A vA uy V, ■ Projects Prove *- Contest’s Worth —To Community Although not an official winner in the National Grange community service contest, Kennewick High lands Grange ended the competi tion with a new Grange hall to its credit. This Benton County Grange, which reported about 4,000 hours devoted to community service pro jects, started out in the fall of i 1949. by boosting the drive for funds for the Kennewick Hospital I Association. As a reward for the members’ efforts in behalf of the hospital project, the Grange re ceived a $20,000 house. As the members were interested in having ! a hall which could be used for community purposes, they voted to accept $10,000 cash in lieu of the house. Grange Hall Built Working together, the Grange members built a 36x70-foot hall with full basement, using about $900 they already had in a build ing fund to furnish the kitchen. Other activities carried on by the Kennewick Highland Grange mem bers included participation in the bloodmobile and highway safety programs. //•' Q^'f’tx 4r I* > -JennyeLinden is pres- ' ent Grange Master. The Highland Grange met for a potluck dinner in its new hall Fri day evening. The new hall is lo cated on the Plymouth highway, just south of the irrigated section of the west Highlands. It is con structed of cement block, and while not entirely completed, i s very nearly so, according to H.E. Reymore, chairman of the building committee. The furnace is being installed at present, and the wir ing, which is nearly complete, is to be hooked up in time for the business meeting to be held in the hall September 8. Reymore states that some of the things remaining to be done are sanding of floors, building of partitions, and cup boards in the basement kitchen. The hal] is 36 by 70 - feet and consists of an ante room, auditor ium and stage with dressing room at each end, on the upstairs floor, while the basement will house a kitchen 12 x 20-feet; dining facili ties with seating capacity of 150; a 16 x 36 - foot juvenile Grange room and . a 10 x 12 - foot furnace room. The building has maple flooring. Reymore stated that a formal opening will be held when the building is completed. M i* sS Jenny? At Tuesday Evening Service The First Methodist church in I Kennewick was the scene of the lovely candlelight ceremony Tuesday evening, when Miss Bonnie Ione Soper, daughter of Mrs. Susie M. Soper of Kenne wick became the bride of Pvt. Carl Edward Henderson, the Rev. A. C. Wischmeier reading the words of the double ring ceremony at 8:30. Given in marriage by her brother, George, the bride chose white taffeta for her wedding ' gown, the bodice designd with • a nylon net yoke complemented by a double strand of pearls. A ' tiara of orange blossoms held her shoulder length veil in place and she carried a white gardenia on her white Bible. Miss Elnora Shockey, her bridesmaid wore a frock of tur quoise in ballerina length and her corsage was of pink.carna tions. Pfc. Thomas Underwood, a close friend of the bridegroom, was best man. BENTON COUNTY Kennevzick Highland Grange had as guests Mar. 28 two boys from Austria, Gottfried Vieider and Hellmut Steindl who are living at present on farms in the Pasco pumping project. They gave splen did talks and answered questions. The best soil conservation essays were read. Marshall Fisher won first prize of $7.50; second prize of $5 was awarded James Beamer, and third prize of $2.50 went to Curtis Moler. This being men’s night, prizes were awarded to Har ry Higley for being a Grange mem ber the longest time; M. G. Clark, oldest charter member present; George Boice, youngest member .present; John Bleichner, largest family and coming farthest to the meeting; and Paul Rogriess, as handsomest man present. The aux iliary has been busy lately. Mrs. Woods donated material for a quilt. The auxiliary will make it, and proceeds will go to the King mem orial youth camp. His article ended, “When Mr. Clark retires this year, Kenne wick Senior High will lose a valuable and respected teach er, but there is no doubt Mr. Clark will go on serving his community as he has for 37 years, backed by a lifetime of experience.” He will attend his final grad uation exercises as a teacher next Tuesday and will hand out his last report cards the fol lowing morning. For Clark the book will be closed on an honorable career. But this was no ordinary.- run-of-the-mill teacher who was being honored. The man stand ing, somewhat bewildered, on the auditorium stage before them was Moulton G. Clark, who retires this spring after a half-century of instruc ting youngsters in science and math ematics. W. Woods. 303 N. Union. Kennewick, a genial 75-ycar-old Highlands grandmother has had her ups-and-downs but nothing has let her down on 4-H club work, a privileged task she continues even from a wheel chair. Mrs. Woods has won about every honor a 4-H leader can get except, of course, adding another year to the tenure of service. With a 27-ycar pin al ready, she is one of the oldest 4-H leaders in the state. She heard another woman in King County has 30 years service. She began her 4-H work with a call club in Ellensburg.. She had her own family to care tor, loo — a son. Clinton, who lives in Salt Lake City. Utah, and a daugh ter, Mrs. Harold Stowe of Pasco. She has four grandchildren . And now .some of the little 4-H girls she had many years ago arc grandmothers themselves. She proudly relates not one member of her clubs that she knows of has ever “went wrong.” Mr. and Mrs. Woods lived about five years in Ellensburg before they moved to Pullman so their children could attend Washington Slate College and live at home. While in Pullman, Mrs. Woods did not have a club of her own but sat ifc on state 4-H sessions and was present when the state 4-H leaders council was formed. They moved from Pullman to Kennewick Highlands 24 years ago where they farmed 21 acres of asparagus and grapes. Now . I he. acreage has been reduced to the 5-acre farm place since Mr. Woods died in 1951. After her start with a calf club in Kittitas County, Mrs. Woods switched her 4-H work to her own skills, clothing, and organized Kennewick Highlands club. She continued as its leader until two years ago when Mrs. Vina Hud son. her assistant took over aft er Mrs. Woods had directed the group several months from the hospital bed and a wheel chair. She had stepped on a tack and gangrene immobilized her. k When she left Kennewick High lands club, other 4-H leaders | wouldn’t think of permitting her to rgire. Instead, she is lead- I rag. Being rousted out at midnight like Koch was on Nov. 16, 1944 isn’t easy to forget. Koch said he growled good na- , turedly when Ralph Westing woke him, but soon relented and joined his supervisor John F. Sembower, Maj. W. C. MacBrayne and other Training and Relations Depart ment personnel in bringing big news to the plant’s entire civilian crew. The “Day’s Pay” had stopped at Hanford Airport July 23, 1944 enroute from the Boeing factory at Seattle to England. “Everybody was anxious to learn how ‘our ' plane’ and her crew was faring,” Koch recalls. His job that night was to help get out an “extra” of the Sage Sentinel (the plant paper) with news of the Day’s Pay and her missions over Germany that bad just arrived via teletype. Greeting the guests were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Thorne. Mrs. Reymore wore an after noon dress of rose with lavender orchid for the reception. Yellow i flowers were used in the decora tion theme with the serving table centered with an arrangement of yellow roses. Pouring were Mrs. W. A. Meyer, Mf. Reymore’s sister of Seattle; Mrs. H. L. Reymore, his sister- in-law of Cheyenne, Wyo.: and | Mrs. J. F. Bell and Mrs. A. A. | Lucke, sisters of Mrs. Reymore. I The Reymores’ grandchildren, I Judy and Steven Thorne had the guest book and background music was furnished by Roger Fenton, a grand-nephew of Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. Reymore were married May 17, 1911 at Karney, Nebr. and made their home in the Midwest until moving to Chey enne in 1917, where they lived un til coming to Kennewick in 1934. 1 Their daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Mar- ! garet) Thorne, lives in Kennewick. ! They lost two sons, Elmo, at the ! age of 16, and George who died ‘ at Guam during the war. He will be moving to his new home in the Riverview district. BENTON COUNTYZi'f Science award //4/ to honor Clark Kennewick Highlands Grange honored M. G. Clark Mar. 10 by establishing the Moulton G. Clark science award. The award will be □resented annually to an outstand ing science student graduating from Kennewick High School. The winner will have his name en graved on a plaque to be dis played in the high school trophy case. Mr. Clark has been an outstand ing science teacher, and taught 50 years before retiring. He was in vited to Oak Ridge, Tenn., by the Atomic Energy Commission to at tend a workshop on peacetime ap plications of atomic energy as it affects plants and animals. He received a Crown Zellerbach scholarship to Oregon State Uni versity to learn methods indus tries use. Mr. Clark is active on commit tees and has served as Master and Overseer of Kennewick High lands Grange. He is a past Master of Benton County Pomona, and served on the State Grange Mar keting committee when it was es tablished. That year Ira Shea formed four new Granges; Rin- gold, Columbia Valley, Kahlotus and Connell. In 1931, R. E. Shea founded the Finley Grange in Benton County and A. W. Swigert the Star Grange in Franklin County. In 1934, The Kennewick High lands Grange became the last Benton County Grange, formed by F. P. Waters. The last local Grange to form was Chiawana, in 1958 by Jack Silvers. While the Finley Grange is one of the oldest in the area, it also claims one of the most illustrious Grange members from the state. Albert S. Goss, Finley Grange master 1916-17, went on to become state Grange master and national master in 1941 and 1950. Now deceased, Goss held several government posts in Washington D.C. be fore his death. First organized as a political body, it slill is to some degree with local Granges getting together to explain legislative matters to members. Local Granges make recommendations on im pending legislation and pass them on to the state or perhaps national level where they are given to leg islators for consideration. Founded by Oliver Hudson Kelley and six oth ers Dec. 4, 1867, in Washington D.C., the Grange movement spread throughout farming communities in the United States and became a political power that gave such men as William Jennings Bryant, famous lawyer and presidential candidate, their po litical base. In 1910, the first two .Granges in the area were formed. S. T. Schell formed the Buena Vista Grange and R. H. Hampshire, Touchet, formed the Finley Grange, both in Benton County. From those first Granges came many more in the two counties. There are 13 today with about 1,647 members. In 1913, W. C. Picking formed the Horse Heaven Grange, and W. U. Case the Kiona-Benton Grange. Case then formed the Locust Grove Grange in 1917 and the Kennewick Valley Grange in 1920. Just as the rains started, and a tre mendous wave coming from the Pasco side washed away 20 feet of dike on the river aide, construction crews drove up with their loads of sandbags. “If that spot had gone,” Kra mer says, “a large part of Rich land would have been flooded.” RIVER EXPERT Kramer is one of the fore most experts about the Colum bia River system, and has made j many recommendations, adopt- ed not only at Hanford but by ■ other federal and state water' users. Many technological advances have been made since 1948: New dams (which can provide storage) have been added to the river system. More use is made of dams to provide flood control — largely as a result of Kramer’s recom mendations. Elaborate networks for weath er and water elevation predic tions have been set up. Some who cooperate are the Soil Con servation Service, the Weather Bureau, the Army Corps of En gineers, the PUDs, and pri vate-power companies. To protect Hanford, a unique system of automatic telemeter ing stations, by radio signals, now monitors the water level temperature, and, recently, the turbidity from Priest Rapids Dam down to the 100 Areas. The system is he result of collabora tion by John Randy, electronic engineer, and Kramer. Kramer’s contributions to his job also received special recog nition. He earned the coveted General Electric Coffin Award while employed at Hanford. li I i' ■ \ iJ - ® f • 1 Most of the 22.000 persons who worked for General Elec tric at Hanford over the past 21 years have taken an active part in community life. One such person is Benton County Commissioner Harry Kramer. One of Kramer's con tributions might be likened to the stof of the Dutch boy who plugged’a hole in a dike with his arm to save his homeland. Kramer, too, once plugged a rampaging Columbia River in an effort to save the Tri-Cities. It was a beautiful June day In 1948, with not a cloud in the sky nor a breeze. Of course the Columbia River was on a ram page because sudden, continu ing hot weather melted snows at the headwaters of the 30 streams feeding the Columbia, and concurrent heavy rain filled the river basin. On this beautiful cloudless day, Kramer heard on his short wave radio a loud crack such as lightning makes. The dike had a weak spot and he knew any bad weather from the southeast would break it up. He immediately called Weather Bu reau stations in Portland, Walla Walla, Spokane and Yakima; the Northern Pacific, Union Pa cific, and Southern Pacific rail road stations; Bonneville Pow er. the telephone company;.and everyone he could think of to see if they could see any clouds. The answer was “No.” In fact, many told him he was , dreaming, or he’d been working too hard; that there was no pos sible meteorological way a storm could develop. Kramer heard the radio crack several more times. “I’d been in this utility business too long” not to know lightning when I hear it, he says. Gerlitz reported: Potatoes rank fourth behind wheat, apples and hay among crops grown in Washington. The production is 1,104,500 tons with a value at the farm of $40,215,000. Washingtonians could help local industry a lot if they ate > only potatoes grown in this state, Gerlitz went on to show. But they couldn’t begin to eat up all the potatoes grown here. Each person in the United States, on an average, eats 118 pounds a year. This includes 71 pounds of fresh potatoes, 47 pounds processed. Second place winner was Sherry Helton and James Dare took third. All the winners are members of Mrs. Nielsen’s Grade 11 Honors English Class. Topic for the contest this year was “IS THERE A NEED FOR CLOSER RURAL URBAN CO OPERATION IN WASHING TON?” The winning entry was sent on to Grange headquarters in Seattle to enter in the state contest. The winning paper was a carefully prepared treatise, cen tered around the idea that be cause of the Supreme Court’s one man, one vote ruling, the urban areas are now in a posi tion to control the state legisla ture and therefore state funds. Unless there is good coopera tion between rural and urban legislators, the areas of the State like the Tri-City area or Benton and Franklin counties could be deprived of their right ful share of State funds. The majority of Washington people now live in five counties which can now control the other thirty- four. Brenda pointed out the un pleasant prospects this could have for this area of the State. The essay contest winners will be given their awards at today‘s meeting of the High land Grange. Prizes are $10.00, $5.00, and $3.00. I Moore Gets M. G. Clark Science Award Brian Moore has been select ed as the 1969 winner of the M. G. Clark Science award. The M. G. Clark Science Award is awarded each year to a student selected by the science teachers as the most representative all around science student in the school. The award is in honor of Mr. Clark, one of the foun ders of the Highland Grange 1037, of Kennewick. The award is given by that Grange. Mr. (/ark was a former, scienceJeaz. x cher in the Kennewick High ’ School and for a time at CBC. has done some work for the Hanford Project, too. The winner of the award has his name inscribed on the pla que which will be displayed in the front showcase and he re ceives a monetary award of $25.00 to use as he wishes. Last year’s winner was John Cad well, who as his teachers said, “lived and breathed science.” The winners of this award are Brian Moore—1969; John Cad well—1968; Richard Schultz — 1967. The award was given first in 1967. Mr. Clark has given con siderable help to the FFA and is an honorary member of that organization. For many years after retiring he did substitute teaching at KHS. His was one of the names suggested for the new high school. The M. G. Clark Science Award is the only such recogni tion that is given in Kennewick for Science students. Moore will be given the award today at the meeting of the Grange. He is a senior this year and is also the Salutatorian for the 1969 class. His GPA is 3.878. Mr. Moore will be attend ing Massachusetts Institute of Technology this coming fall. BENTON COUNTY Science award to Brian Moore Brian Moore has been selected by Kennewick High School science teachers to receive the 1969 M. G. Clark science award, given an nually by Kennewick Highlands t Grange in honor of M. G. Clark ’ who lives in Kennewick. He was ’ a science teacher at the Kenne wick High School for many years and is a past Master. Brian will receive a $25 gift from the Grange and his name will be inscribed on a plaque which hangs in the high school. He has completed a heavy science schedule with a high grade point average of 3.878. He is salutatorian of the 1969 senior class, and is the son of Marvin Moore, Kennewick.
