Description

Quilt, poppy pattern, family tradition says made by Elizabeth Rodgers of the Leadvale community in Jefferson County, c. 1820 before her marriage to William Boyd Helm (1797-1854) in 1822, constructed by hand, cotton fabric, red and fugitive green with white print, cotton sewing thread, white muslin backing, thin cotton batting, corner covered by repair, block pieced, 16" block, 9 applique on point blocks, alternate blocks - print, upper right block is different from others, borders, 4.5" on two ends, quilted by hand, 8/10 stitches per inch, by the piece, echo in block, grid and echo background design, grided plain block design, diagonal lines border. This quilt has not been accessional into the ETHS artifact collection because its condition neither allows it to be exhibited nor restored, but it will be available for historical documentation and possible scholarly research.
