Quilt, string star pattern, cotton, uses scraps of dress-and-suit fabrics on front and 25-pound sugar sacks for backing (Dixie Crystals and Savannah Sugar Refinery), fan quilted with thick thread, some green marks for quilting lines still show, home dyed, binding back to front, 20 blocks, borders on 2 sides, string pieced by hand, 3 stiches per inch, white cotton thread, 1920s (based on fabrics).
Comments from Knoxville quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel, 5/2/03--1920s (based on fabrics), strong East Tennessee characteristics include 1) fan quilting, 2) string technique, particularly string star, 3) resourcefulness, use of sacks (although sugar sacks is unusual), 4) home dyed, 5) binding back to front, 6) thick thread for quilting (utilitarian quilts). Becky Till, the donor, adds that this quilt exhibits another regional trend she's noticed on country quilts--knotting the quilt on the top/front, rather than on the back.Collection
