Quilt in variation of Irish Chain pattern; maker unknown although almost certainly the Shields family (perhaps Adeline Carrell Shields); cotton fabrics: red-and-white print , solid black, solid green, solid blue--all of which appear to be home dyed with commercial dye such as Rit or Putnam; bright-green binding, "Ethel Chambers" and "E. Chambers" inked on backing; heavy/thick batting (might be hand-carded cotton); quilting roughly done (perhaps because of thick batting); 76"l x 60"w; c. 1900-1920, estimated date of top/1930s-1940s for quilting.*
* 8/9/2006 Quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel of Knoxville believes someone backed and quilted the top at a later date than the fabrics indicate. Green binding may even be polyester, which backs the date up. This may be an inter-generational quilt. "Visually its strong. Good colors. Has a border."Collection
