Description

Painting by William Russell Briscoe entitled "Christmas Morning 1909" (per metal label attached to frame front) oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right corner "W. Russell Briscoe/ 1969," 26"h x 34"w x 1 3/4"d with 2005 replacement frame. The setting is the home of Russell Briscoe's parents--William Nicholas Briscoe--at 1613 Church Avenue (Knoxville), where he grew up. The room interior shows a well-decorated Christmas tree in the right back corner, stockings hanging from the fireplace, a winter scene painting above the mantel, a dollhouse in the left corner, and a large train in the right foreground. The dollhouse is a miniature representation of the 1627 W. Cumberland Avenue home of his grandfather, Daniel Briscoe [now the site of U.T.'s Strong Hall].
