2008.1.1Description
Quilt, four-block applique in a wreath pattern with currants and flowers (pink print-and-red blossoms with yellow centers), leaf-and-currant border, solid-red cotton binding applied by machine, hand appliqued and hand quilted, 3/8" diagonal line quilting fills background with heart and bird motifs/feathered flowers/outline quilting and echo quilting in each floral design, unwashed/pencil marks for quilting lines remain, seamed at center, two-piece cream-color backing, dark quilting thread shows on back, very low loft cotton batting, maker unknown, c.1880 (according to family note and appraiser).
Quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel believes this pattern has deep roots in East Tennessee, specifically the Rhea County-Cleveland area. She calls the pattern Coxcomb and Currants, a descriptive name without basis in historical fact; she has also heard it called Cotton Boll.
According to Merikay the color of the green is a good indicator that it was made in the 1880s.
Dark quilting showing on back is a Tennessee trait.
Atlanta appraiser Holly Anderson references the pattern names Rose Tree, Cotton Boll, and Prairie Flower.Collection
