Section of aluminum ingot, rectangular, surface engraved "SECTION OF THE FIRST INGOT / ALCOA SHEET MILL / AUG. 16, 1920" at center, marked "JT3" in ink at top right corner, 2 1/8"h x 8 7/8"w x 1/2"d, August, 16, 1920.
Provenance:
Construction of Alcoa's Sheet Mill, now known as the West Plant, was begun in 1919, the year of incorporation for the city of Alcoa. The first aluminum sheet was rolled in 1920.
Alcoa-owned photograph of the South Plant shows aluminum cast into ingots, 1939. The ingots would then be transported to the West Plant (the North Plant in the 1940s) for fabrication into various products. Later, in the 1940s, they went to the North Plant, and eventually there was an ingot plant at the South Plant so that these ingots were no longer cast and shipped to other plants on the Alcoa grounds.Collection
