Tobacco basket, loosely woven wood slats roughly 2"-3"w with 2"-4"w spaces between slats, reinforced with diagonal slats secured with nails, heavier wood frame wrapped around edge and secured with nails, "001497" stenciled in corners, "KNOXVILLE, TENN" stenciled on opposite sides and "DEAN PLANTERS" and other two sides, unknown maker, 37 1/2"h x 38"w x 4"d, c. 1950s.
Note: Tobacco baskets were utilitarian flat-slat tray-like forms, usually four feet square with a shallow depth of four to five inches. They were woven very loosely and held together by a frame and nails. Cut tobacco was piled high on these flat baskets to move the tobacco from field to curing barn and also to transport the cured leaves to market.Made/Created
