Description

Quilt made by Florence Day McKamey, "Crown of Thorns" pattern (aka Sunrise, Rocky Mountain Road, New York Beauty--a 1930s name for this old pattern that today is considered incorrect). Turkey red, orange, white, and blue (probably faded from green) fabric. Motif is complex and includes: red squares containing yellow and red sunbursts and stars, blue rib-like designs, 1/4 red sunbursts. Corners of quilt have been rounded off. Backing is rough white cotton, with horizontal seam at center. Applied binding, faded to blue. "13.90" has been inked in two opposite corners; probably a laundry mark. Hand pieced. Hand quilted; quilting has a flower petal/ finger-like appearence. c. 1880s. Comments from Merikay Waldvogel, 3/16/2004-- Faded (evenly) and abraided. The quilt is fabulous. Estimated date based on pattern, colors, etc. is 1880s.
