Large stoneware jar with strap handles made by D.L. Smith Pottery, gray glaze, impressed "DL SMITH"* and incised "4", remnants of red paint (paint removed before acquired by Meredith Smith), stamp "DL2MITID4," Blount County, 15"h x 11 1/2"w, 1870-1885.
* Namuni Young indicated to Mr. Smith that D. L. Smith was a potter working with William Grindstaff. Buford Blanton (5/20/05) says this is a Grindstaff-made piece for the business of D. L. Smith. Carole Wahler says it is D.L. Smith Pottery; also that the D appears to be a G. Smith was literate but the blacksmith making the stamp likely was not.Made/Created
