Description

Quilt related to family of Gov. Joseph McMinn*, Basket of Flowers pattern, double pink, blue and fugitive cotton fabric, four 27" x 29" applique blocks, chrome yellow cotton borders, 12" border, front to back binding, cotton loose backing, cotton batting, cotton thread, quilted with all-over parallel lines, by block parallel lines, diamond hatching sashing, cross hatch border, 10 stitches per inch, constructed by hand, 86"h x 90"w, c. 1880s**. Exhibit sleeve on reverse. * CHECK/RESEARCH genealogy for McMinn's sister Martha--whether she could have been the maker ** Quilt historian and ETHS textile adviser Merikay Waldvogel says this quilt dates to the 1880s rather than c. 1870. That would make it after the death of Hettie McMinn Morrison in 1879. - Comments from Merikay Waldvogel 11/19/02 - "interesting applique - vases of flowers - and border!"
