Description

Quilt made by Kitzmiller or DeVault family, "Taylor's Victory"* pattern, red/white, 93" x 72". Regional characteristic: without border no matter how formal it is meant to be--pattern goes to edge and ends there (one idea is that it was meant to be tucked under the mattress as a blanket rather than spread over the top as a cover with sides hanging down to view * Known by this name in the Jonesboro area Note: In the final label copy for the ETHS feature exhibit "Stories in Stitches" (2017), quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel decided to call the pattern Taylor's Victory (rather than Taylor's Victory - Taylor's Defeat). She went through her notes of the quilt documentation days in the 1980s along with input from Candy St. Lawrence and Randi Nott. She didn't see anyone using the name Taylor's Defeat. She admits that we'll likely never know for sure how it got its name; one story is under Notes section.
