Jug made by Samuel Smith Pottery, stoneware, applied handle, potter's finger marks visible, "SMITH, IR [R in superscript'" impressed under handle terminal,12 1/2"h, 1820-1830. Provenance: Made at Samuel Smith Pottery by Swiss potter Samuel L. Smith Jr. [1800, Switzerland-1873, Blackjack, Texas, m. 1823 to Onie/Oney Carnes/Karnes(1823, Knoxville-1873, Blackjack, Texas)], who immigrated to Knoxville in 1819, earliest documented potter in Knoxville, listed in 1820 Manufacturers Census), left Anderson County for Texas in 1849 and settled in Smith County, naming their town Knoxville.
