Description

Overshot coverlet in cotton and wool. Pattern name is "Twenty-five Snowballs" with "Bowknot" border. Red, dark blue and off white; two panels. Handwoven; re-hemmed edge is machine stitched. (Probably same weaver as coverlet 2001.63.18.) Dale Liles agrees with Kathleen Wilson that the weaver was proably a professional. Both the evenness of the complex geometric pattern and the way the two panels are stitched together shows the ability of the weaver. John Coker had a date of 1870; Kathleen Wilson estimated 1890s-1910 (11/18/2001). According to Wilson, the coverlet might not have been made in the family. The family might have traded wool for the making of the coverlet. Probably the same weaver who wove #2001.63.18. Similar style, tension, and exactly the same pattern draft. The thread looks to be commercially dyed. She suggested asking Jim Liles to take a look at the threads for estimate of the age of the dyeing. Jim Liles thought synthetic dyes were probably used with a date of 1890s (2/18/2002). Dale Liles suggested looking in Sadie Wilson's book on coverlets for this time period.
