Quilt, "Pine Burr"* pattern, Brackman #2991 Manflower, 30 12" blocks, pieced by the block, four-pointed stars using red and green fabric on white background, handsewn, applied scrap binding, cotton backing, quilted by the piece and center grid, quilted grid in background, 5 stitches/inch with white and pink cotton thread, 2" cotton borders, square corners, 80"h x 64"w, c. 1880.
old binding replacement, binding is green on long sides and red-and-white check on short sides, quilted in parallel rows, course stitching, hand pieced and hand quilted, red-and-white check binding at top and bottom, otherwise red binding, uneven quilting and knots on back that shouldn't be there--both evidence that quilting is not by expert, perhaps by child, quilting thread appears white on top and pink below.
* "Pine Burr" is a strong regional pattern; seen in Tennessee but not in the North or Midwest.Collection
