Quilt, Whig's Defeat pattern*, plume applique pattern, nine 26" x 26" blocks, appliqued by the block, handsewn/even under binding, red and green plume appliqued to white background, applique is well done, applied straight binding (green), cotton backing, cotton batting (some debris--tiny twigs--may be left from the cotton), quilted by the block in hearts and double row of curved lines with colored thread, quilted five-lobed flower in center of each applique/stem and veins are quilted using green thread in each green leaf (use of colored thread is regional characteristic), 7 stitches/inch with cotton thread, no attached note. square corners, c. 1850.
John Coker's notes say c.1870. Knoxville quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel says 1840s-1850s because the fabrics (1850s green) and style are pre-Civil War; *gives pattern name as Whig's Defeat.
Comments from Merikay Waldvogel on 1/23/02:
May be a bridal quilt because of the heart quilting and the fact that the fabric is the same throughout, meaning there was a plan and the fabrics were chosen for the project. It appears that different people worked on it--different quilting styles in green leaves (seen from back). Unusual applique pattern, probably reflecting a flower.Collection
