Description

Quilt top. "25 Patch" or "Checkerboard" pattern, made by Martha Jane Armstrong Kennedy, 56 7" patch blocks, 3.5" sashing, 3.5" 9 Patch cornerstones, pieced by the block, handsewn, manganese brown, red and teal cotton fabrics, the set is white-with-red fabric, cotton thread, tacked-on note--in ink, script--in lower right corner reads "M.J. Kennedy to H.K. Campbell 1890" [Martha Jane Kennedy, Hugh Kennedy Campbell], unquilted, most fabrics from the 1860s, c. 1890. Comments by Knoxville quilt historian Merikay Waldvolgel, 1/23/02: "Interesting pattern that combines the Nine Patch with the Checkerboard (or 25 Patch) and forms a strong diagonal effect. Note interesting fabrics in nine patches (spider webs) that are not in larger patches. Date confirms the fabrics [1880s previously used as fabric date]."
