Description

Quilt, "Irish Chain" (or alternately "9 Patch") pattern, made by Martha Jane Armstrong Kennedy, 21 13.5" pieced blocks, handsewn, white, brown and pink fabrics (small squares include English fabrics, some may be made with woodblocks, per Knoxville quilt historian Merikay Waldvogel), newer blue star binding/hand applied binding, muslin backing, 8 stitches/inch with cotton thread, cotton batting, quilted by block with parallel lines, quilted in plain blocks with triple row and hanging grid, no border, course cotton backing--three panels of 31", 33" and 17", rounded corners. Handwritten note in ink on cloth sewn to back corner, reads "Sept. 9, 1912. Lloyd, Your Grand Mother Kennedy pieced and quilted this quilt before she married. She was married the year 1847, Sept. the 9th. (Your Mother)" [Annie Kennedy Campbell's note to her son Lloyd Campbell refers to his maternal grandmother, Martha Armstrong Kennedy] Hanging sleeve. Note: Constructed with some of the same fabrics as Caesar's Crown quilt 2001.63.46.
