Description

Funeral basket made by Rufus Ellison Hickey (the Hickey family), drawn oak/oak rod; tall, elongated round basket--17.5" tall from inside base to top of handle; 19" from outside base to top of handle; top rim is oval--8.5" wide, from handle edge to handle edge x 9.5", 7" diameter, 2"-wide round base; round handle; c. 1910-1920s. Provenance: Rufus Ellison Hickey [(1851, Newport-1953, Rutledge) m. in 1894 to Eva Emiline Warren (1872, New Market-1948, Rutledge)]. Hickey made his living from basketmaking (also making chairs and brooms), with his children helping.
