Metal triangular Indian Cave sign that reads "SEE INDIAN CAVE - MILES TO NATURE"S WONDERLAND U.S. 11 W. TO BLAINE - ACRES OF $35,000.00 ELECTRIC LIGHTING" in red, and black paint, the "INDIAN CAVE" words are a reflective metallic most likely made by crushed glass, 66 1/8"w x 33 1/8"h x 1/2"d.
Provenance: Indian Cave Park Association was formed in 1916 to develop the cave as a commercial attration. It was open as an attraction from 1924 to 2005.
Prior to this, the cave was believed to be used by Native Americans, trapers, and settlers. In 1983, human remains were found by UT and dated over 3,000 years old. It is also notable to mention that the cave was used by the Donelson party in 1779 during their movement down the Holston River to settle in Nashville. Robert Frederick Hoke, a former Confederate General from NC, purchased the land four years after the Civl War. Bat guano was later mined from the cave due to it's high saltpeter content that was use din making gunpowder.Dimensions
