B & W digital scan of LADWP Laborers applying asphalt paint to LA Aqueduct Siphon Pipes, location unknown.
"The paint used on the pipe was a residual hydro-carbon oil, resulting from the manufacture of gas from California asphalt oil, which penetrates rust and rust scales on the metal. All the steel work on the Aqueduct is painted with this material." --from LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, 1916, pg. 230Collection
