B & W digital scan of LADWP Employee atop Alabama Gates Diversion Structure, north end of Alabama Hills. Alabama Gates acted as a valve to relieve pressure on the LA Aqueduct by diverting surplus water into the old Owens River Channel. The "Gates" marked the end of the Unlined Section of the Aqueduct and the beginning of the Lined Section that ran to Haiwee Resevoirs. Later in the teens or early 1920's a protective structure was built over the five valves pictured in the image. Looking west to Sierra Nevada.Collection
