B & W digital scan of LADWP Steam Shovel and Crew in action excavating trench on LA Aqueduct Project. Laborer sitting near boom may be controlling bucket? as mules look on. Note; man in trench barely visible below boom. "All excavations of the 430 second-foot condduits was made with Model 40 Marion steam Shovels, carrying 3/4 yeard dippers and booms 25 feet in length. The normal width of excavation was 12 1/2 feet and the normal depth 10 1/2 feet. It was found desirable to waste all the excavated material on one side of the ditch where possible, so as to leave the other side clear for the handling of materials for the lining." - from LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, 1916 pg. 173Collection
