B & W digital scan of LA Aqueduct Steam Shovel (rear view) and Laborers excavating a channel for open, Lined Section of LA Aqueduct, location south of Olancha. Note tracks and Rails laid under Shovel to allow it to move forward. Also note the stabilizer bar locked into left side of trench to balance machine. "One electric shovel and several steam shovels were purchased to start work. The materieals excavated can best be divided into four classes; first, the loose desert soil; second, boulders of medium size, more or less cemented; third extremely large boulders and fourth cemented gravel or solid rock." -- from LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, 1916Collection
