Description

B & W digital scan of LADWP Electric Dipper Dredge and crew atop Dredge excavating Unlined Canal section of LA Aqueduct, between Independence and north end of Alabama Hills. Survey stakes visible in front of dredge marking excavation route. "In view of the high ground water table and the necesarily flat gradient (one foot per mile) and correspondingly large cross-section, this type of construction was adopted. The cost of this work is also very low." The excavation amounted to 15 cubic yards per running foot and was accomplished at an average cost of $1.79 per lineal foot. The dipper dredge excavated 70,090 feet at an average cost of $0.81 per lineal foot." --from LA Aqueduct Construction Report, Final Report, 1916, pg 160
