Description

B & W digital scan of LADWP suction dredge used to excavate open, unlined section of LA Aqueduct, which stretched from the Intake to the Alabama Gates (23 miles). "The excavation is all being done by floating dredges operated by power furnished from three hydroelectric plants owned and operated by the City. The canal section is 38 feet wide on the bottom 62 feet at the flow line and will carry a depth of 7 feet of water when discharging 900 second feet of water. The work of excavating the main canal has progressed in so rapid and satisfactory a manner that it has not been necessary to continue the operation of all three dredges in the valley. The dipper dredge No. 14 which was found most effective was maintained in commission one of the suction dredges was shipped to Tehachapi for work at the cement plant and the other held in reserve in Owens Valley." --from LA Aqueduct Annual Report, 1912 This photo was either taken by or from the collection of Edward Francis Leahey.
