Photo of Southern Pacific flatbed cars hauling poles. Station and depot visible to right, Southern Pacific boxcar #76 on left.
Written in pencil on reverse: 12. Poles caught fire after unloading at Laws. Dry grass, cigarette. 75 foot poles, $100 each for California Electric Power Co., City absorbed Co.
Written in black ink on reverse: Transferring power poles, Owenyo, 1948.
Stamped in purple ink on reverse with W. F. Tommer's address.
Old interpretive label says: These are the 75 foot long power poles which were to be delivered from Owenyo to Laws. You can see the transfer of the poles from the broad gauge to the narrow gauge cars. As the narrow gauge cars are only 29 feet long it took five flatcars to move them. The poles were delivered and stacked at Laws, but never went any further. The pile of poles caught fire from a cigarette thrown into the dry grass. The last picture shows the fire being put out. The poles were valued at $100.00 each.Collection
