Description

Photo postcard of a daring couple (Edward Leahy and Ruth Jacobsen) taking a ride in the jaws of a Marion 60 steam shovel. This machine was used to carve out a 39 mile path for the open, lined section of the L.A. Aqueduct project between Alabama Gates and Haiwee Reservoir. Leahy, a LADWP official and longtime resident of Owens Valley, eventually married Jacobsen. Photo was taken looking north to Cottonwood Power Plant housing area. Written in pencil on reverse: Cottonwood.
