Description

Studio bust-length portrait of a man with a long white beard. He is identified on the reverse as William Lyle Hunter, Sr. Old label says: William Lyle Hunter was born in Virginia in 1842. He served in the Confederate army and became a Lieutenant under Colonel Mosby in the Civil War. He came to California in 1868 and located at Cerro Gordo during the height of that camp's prosperity. Hunter owned and operated a large pack train. When Cerro Gordo declined, he discovered a group of mines in Beveridge district known as Hunter Canyon Mines. These he operated until his death in 1902. WIlliam Lyle Hunter married Carrie Duval. They had five children. William Lyle Hunter served as Supervisor from 1873-1874.
