AROMAS, CALIF. 95004 722-6090 • ■ ' f, f ■ / ' We first lived at Mammoth in 1927 and the only road into the area turned off of U.S•Highway "595 near the Standard Oil Storage tanks below Casa Diablo and followed up along Mammoth Creek. It crossed the creek between^the^ s±tes of the Mammoth Garage and Penney’s Bakery and nearby was the U.S.F.S read quarters. A little farther up the road on the flats was the large general store and Post Office combined and a service station across from It. were owned by the Summer® family, old time residents, who owned iuc-* o_ uhe property Ln this area at one time. The store was managed by Fred Brooks for many years, now a resident of Blshop.Nearby on the meadow was the large Mammoth Hotel or Summers Hotel built in 1913, also the Wildasinn hotel and cabin®. All of these buildings were destroyed by fire early in 1927 and the large rock fireplace was a silent reminder of the old Summers Hotel d for many years. Remains of an old sawmill were to be seen along the or ek back of the store and we have an old cast iron forge of the type used with a bellows, that we found here. A never sawmill was then in operation several miles to the north of Old Mammoth known as Hess Saw Mill . These few businesses made up th© town which served the small community and a few resorts up at the Lakes, which were reached by driving up the old grade through Mineral Park, Mill City and Mammoth City with it’s hairpin curve®. In 1957 a modern highway was built about two miles north of Old Mammoth with a more gradual ascent to the Lakes and the present town of Mammoth Lakes was begun. tfe lived at Mammoth on and off for about 14 years, moving from the old to the new town where we were in business for 10 years. These were very happy years despite the hard work and we enjoyed many pleasures in that beautiful mountain ana lake country. Of the four distinctly different seasons encountered there I believe I en joyed spring ths most, particularly because I could walk outdoors without having to don ” snow gear'* and it felt so good to walk on good solid earth again* Also the fragrance of sage and pine filled the air and everything was eo fresh and clean, and the warm bright sun, the melting snow all combined to make it a very happy time. vernier time flow by on fast win/rs, we were too busy to enjoy it. Winter or the ’'shut-in time” ae the old timere up on the hill used to call it usually began with a heavy snow around November let. It was a very beauti ful time with the snow covering everything with soft lines and lovely contours. Long, quiet, peaceful days were enjoyed and of-times the only sound to break the stillness was the barking of the dog teams coming over the hill from Old Mammoth, which could be heard for many miles, or the ever welcome noise of the enow plow opening our road in from the highway. A feeling of close companionship and friendliness prevailed among the two dozen or eo of u« who made up the whole population of tne Mammoth Lakes area the winters of the early 1940’s, and many parties and dances were enjoyed, with friends Joining in ffe’ many miles around. The lonely caretakers living at the different resorts up at the Lakes and one from the Monte Christo Mino usually were able to ski down and Join in the fun. The owners of the teams Tex -and Luth Cushion, who lived at Old Mammoth , helped our little community and the higher areas in many ways and sometimes tnese dog teams were our only contact with the outbids. Now most of the faces we knew are gone and new bu,slneases and new faces are the order of the day. In our travels through the ghost town area of much of the west, we have made many tours of the old graveyards, some so far gone that not even a name remains. In others we find the lovely inscriptions used many years ago. Fencings vary greatly, all the way from stones, pickets, cast iron, heavy wire, marble and even the pretty red building bricks. I’ll bet you never got a letter like this before J EL At Garlock, in the ruins of an old roofed-over cellar, where it was protected from moisture, I'found a tin slightly larger than an aspirin tin with most of the lettering and decals intact. It has a picture of an owl in a captains uniform. The pills were called ’’Captain John Orderley’s” .and were reputedly a cure for just about everything thot ails the human body. Each tablet contained 1/200 grain of strichnyne ’ Manufacured by Owl Drug Stores, San Francisco. While this is not a bottle, I still consider it a real find ’ The hinged lid still works, although the edges are frayed with rust. 1 I e CLM, Old Grinding Wheel Measuring four feet in diameter and having a. width of six inches, this is another of the interesting and antique mining items seen near the Diamond kino, in a picturesque canyon several miles out of Eureka, Xevada. ?iany other metal items; of early mining use are to be seen here in original condition. Quite out of the ordinary is this barn built// to house the early camel trains. Of sturdy stone construction, it is about 15 by -38 feet and has/ double wooden entrance doors ten feet high. A/// narrow and windowless building, \the inside walls are lined with wooden stalls. It is adjacent to/ a large fenced corral, and several sheds, occu-/ pying quite a space on a back street in the old/ mining town of Dayton, Nevada. Camel trains were used for freight shipment as early as I860 in the southern part of the coun-/ try, then they carried loads of salt from the/// Esmeralda SaliiMarshes to various silver camps. Their use was discontinued in a few years and/ the remaining animals turned out to forage for// themselves on the Nevada deserts, resulting in// many tall tales.
