Photo of a LADWP dipper dredge [accession record calls it a steam shovel] carving a channel for the LA Aqueduct through the soft, moist Owens Valley alluvium. These machines excavated 21 miles of open, unlined canal stretching from the Intake to the Alabama Gates. Handwritten in pen on reverse: Construction of aqueduct.
