Toll House, Westgard Pass

Name/Title

Toll House, Westgard Pass

Entry/Object ID

A1164.17

Description

Copy of a photo of the old toll house at Westgard Pass. The toll rates sign on the side of the building is in the ECM (A506.1). Photo taken by Harry W. Mendenhall and titled, "Toll House, Westgard Pass." Part of the photographer's name and title have been cut off in this enlargement, but it is the same image as 2011.3.33 so we also know that it has Mendenhall's ID #80A. Unverified information: The residence is located adjacent to Batchelder Springs, which provided a water source for thirsty travelers and overheating engines. At 8 miles the desert vegetation is interrupted by shade trees around Toll House Spring. Scott Broder built the original toll road in 1853. The road crosses the mountain pass named by the Good Roads Club of Inyo County to honor A. L. Westgard of the American Automobile Association. Westgard Pass arbitrarily divides the White Mountains from the Inyo Mountains to the south. Photo may be circa 1911.
