Collection of 16 photos of the Beatty, Nevada area in 1905. The photos were taken by the donor, George Cook.
A617.1--Cook's camp in Transvaal Mining District (25 miles north and east of Beatty). Center tent with Mr. Geo. Cook standing in center of group. Other two tents people stayed two weeks then moved. Mr. Cook stayed 6 months. 1905.
A617.2--Hotel in Beatty, Nevada. Built in 1905. Picture taken the next morning after the hotel dedication.

A617.4--First Decoration Day in Beatty, Nevada, 1905. Tom Devine third from the right. Sixth Charlie Sexton. Last Bob Hogland. Two men buried, one a civil engineer and Mr. Alexander (second grave) thrown from horse and killed. (Mr. Cook helped make coffins). First two men who died in Beatty.

A617.6--Beatty Main Street looking east. On site of Montana Club--Greenwood Hotel stands today. 1905. Beatty rag town then. (Mr. Levey built first frame house in Beatty, Nevada.) Also built ice plant--Pioneer Liquor now.

A617.8--Jim Beatty, 1905. The town of Beatty was named after Mr. Beatty. Information Mr. Cook got he had lived there about thirty years before Beatty was established. Before gold was found. Sold little ranch to Patrick Water Company and they piped water to Rhyolite ($10,000 price of ranch). He sent his children out to private school. Maude had good education. Later worked for government.
A617.9--Mr. Jim Beatty's little ranch. Had a few cattle. Hard times. Had to go to Pahrump 75 or 76 miles to get provisions. Took about 3 or 4 days trip one way. Mr. Beatty by door, girl his daughter Maude, son Frank and ? 1905. (Oldest Frank killed in France World War I)
A617.10--One of the large freighting teams from Las Vegas to Beatty. (Las Vegas was end of Salt Lake-LA RR [railroad]). 4 or 5 tents there at that time 1905 (Feb). (Geo. Cook April 10, 1957) The depot was one of the first mail coaches ever built. We took 6 horse stage to Beatty, Nevada 125 miles and ten on stage including driver. 9 of us 2 1/2 days without anything to eat (they had to feed driver, no food for others). Stations about every twenty miles. 3 days from L.V. to Beatty. 30 days for freight teams. [Hauling a load of hay.]

A617.12--Rose and Palmer team. Had general store in Beatty, Nevada, 1905. Hay and grain.
A617.13--H. D. and L. D. Porter's team. Main Street of Beatty, Nevada. Hauled from Las Vegas to Beatty. 1905. Porters had a dry goods store in Rhyolite (1906). Went Rhyolite and went to Phoenix called the "Western Store (after leaving Beatty).
A617.14--1905. Indian women at bake shop in Beatty, Nevada. Gutheries run bakery. Mrs. Gutherie and her sister left Beatty on their way to Ballarat with Panamint Joe as guide. He died on the way (1910). The team gave out and they were out of water. Maggie, Panamint Joe's squaw, and their little girl walked to Emigrant Springs for water. Mr. Gutherie went for help to Skidoo. When he got there he was out of his head. Skidoo Mines team had a barrel of water in wagon went to hunt Gutherie women. Delmar Bob (called Randsburg) found them. Saw where women had crawled down over bank shading clothes. Took women back to Skidoo. Dr. McDonald took care of them for about a week. They were later taken to Ballarat.
