Description

Framed photograph and card containing the signature of John Harris Soper dated 01/01/1923 in Honolulu. It is a seated studio portrait of Soper in uniform. He is wearing three medals, and has gloves, hat, and an ornate sword in his lap. His sideburns are particularly notable. The framing was done by Pacific Picture Framing Co. in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. Soper was in full charge of all military operations in connection with the overthrow of the Monarchy of Hawaii and the establishment of the Provisional Government and the Republic. Prior to that, in 1863 he was with a party that went into the Owens Valley mines, and in 1869, on a prospecting trip to White Pine, he returned to his home in Vallejo via Owens Valley, Mono Lake, Bloody Canon, Yosemite Valley, and Fresno.
