Photo of the town of Darwin after a fire on July 7, 1918.
Handwritten on reverse: July 7, 1918. At 2 P.M. on a quiet Sunday the peace was shattered by a violent explosion in the Domingo Etcharren home--built in 1875-6. The inside completely enveloped in flames, no one could get inside--next the store went--we managed to get some things out and Post Office books and some of Mamie Reynolds' furniture burned in the street when the flames leaped across to the hotel and on up the 2nd block. All we could ever do at a fire in Darwin is stand and watch it burn tho the old buildings were built of redwood and square nails. It was surprising these locust trees did not burn.Collection
