Description

Photo of the town of Darwin after a fire on July 7, 1918. There is a small blue ink arrow on lower right side of photo. Handwritten on reverse: July 7, 1918. 2 blocks burned--main buildings store--hotel, Mrs. Longhrey's restaurant, Frank Carthery's home--all built in 1875-6. Shows our old school house also across from the "Long house" is the old corrals and barn next to school house of Defiance Mining Co., then left of "Long house" is the Defiance blacksmith shop bldg. Above town in background shows grade going around hill from Defiance Smelter on up to Defiance Mine on other side--the original claims located Nov. 1874. The smelter is on hill right behind tree at left of picture.
